During the final day of the NATO summit, President Joe Biden will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, following Zelenskyy’s expressed disappointment over the lack of a timeline for Ukraine’s integration into the alliance. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg introduced a three-part package to bring Ukraine closer to NATO, a move which was welcomed by Zelenskyy, but he remarked that an invitation to NATO membership would have been preferred.
The summit also sees the training of the Ukrainian air force in the use of F-16 fighter jets by Denmark and 10 other NATO allies. As the event concludes, Biden will give a keynote speech at Vilnius University before traveling to Helsinki to celebrate NATO’s expansion with Finland as its latest member.
Despite the positive steps, Zelenskyy stated that while the NATO summit results were good, an invitation to the alliance would have been more ideal. He noted that some are reluctant to discuss Ukraine joining NATO due to the potential risk of a world war, but believes the clear signal indicates Ukraine’s future inclusion in NATO when conditions permit.
